How the Characteristics of God Can Empower Women

Nov 26, 2021 | Blogs

One of humanity’s greatest fears is the fear of being alone and abandoned, both physically and emotionally. As Christians, there are many attributes of God that can provide comfort to us and help us to overcome this fear, as well as every other fear.

God is Omnipresent

You are never, ever alone! God is always with you no matter where you are, or where you go. He is the God of the mountains and the God of the valleys! He is with you in your hopes and dreams, and He is with you in your despair and despondency. We need not worry, because wherever we go, God is there. He is ‘Emmanuel’, the God Who is with us. (Matthew 1:23)

Be strong and courageous. Do not fear or be in dread of them, for it is the Lord your God who goes with you. He will not leave you or forsake you.” Deuteronomy 31:6 ESV

And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age. Matthew 28:20 ESV

Even if you are abandoned by friends or family, you can take comfort in knowing that the Lord will never abandon you!

God is Omniscient

Our God is an all knowing God. Although there are many times in our lives when we are caught off-guard, you cannot catch God by surprise. There is nothing that has happened in your life or in this world that He didn’t see coming, and nothing that is about to happen that can catch HIm unaware. Picture yourself being at a parade and watching the floats, marching bands, and other parade participants from the vantage point of the sideline. You can only see what has already gone by in the parade, and what is before you. Now imagine the person who planned for every entrant to be in the parade, planned for the order of the parade,  and who is watching in a helicopter above the parade; that person is completely aware of the beginning, middle, and end of the parade even though you as the sideline watcher are not. Similarly, God is the Creator and Sustainer of all of life, and He has a ‘bird’s-eye view’ of everything. God has shared as one of His names that He is ‘I Am that I Am’– the One Who was, Who is, and Who is to come. There is nothing outside of His purview in all of history, or ever will be. Remember, the word history really is equated with His story–He is bringing everything together for His planned purposes and end.

He knows everything about everything, from the vastness of the universe He created to the microscopic level. He also knows your every thought and desire. A common fear we have is the fear that if our friends or family really knew who we were deep down inside, then they wouldn’t like us, because we are all aware at the core of our being that we are sinners and ‘fall short of the glory of God’.(Romans 3:23). We don’t need to fear this with God; He knows us better than we know ourselves, and even with that intimate knowledge of us, He loves us more than anyone else ever can or will!

“O Lord, you have searched me and known me! You know when I sit down and when I rise up; you discern my thoughts from afar. You search out my path and my lying down and are acquainted with all my ways. Even before a word is on my tongue, behold, O Lord, you know it altogether.” Psalm 139: 1-4 ESV,

Isn’t it a joy to know that God knows everything, even our deepest self, and still loves and accepts us unconditionally?!

God is Sovereign

As women, the fear of being overpowered can be paralyzing. We can feel vulnerable because of our size and physical strength, and fearful that we cannot control situations where we could be in harm’s way. We can know that God, the Most Powerful Person in the Universe, is always with us, and ‘His strength is made perfect in our weakness’. 2 Corinthians 12:9

Our God spoke and brought the world into existence; He brought the flood upon the whole earth, yet was able to spare Noah, his family, and two of every kind of animal in the Ark; He enabled Sarah and Abraham to have an heir in their old age; He was able to part the Red Sea for the Israelites and provide for them for 40 years in the wilderness; He gave supernatural strength to Samson; He shut the lion’s mouths and protected Daniel when he was in the lion’s den; He was the 4th one in the fiery furnace with Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego; He gave birth to HIs Beloved Son through the Virgin Mary; and His unfathomable, limitless power caused Jesus to be resurrected from the grave and to overcome death!!! And you question whether the situation you find yourself in is too difficult for God?!

You and I who have put our faith in and surrendered our lives to God can trust that He is  all-powerful, that nothing is outside of His control, and that ‘nothing is impossible’ for Him (Luke 1:37) You can have absolute confidence in Him and His Almighty power!

God is Wisdom

Have you ever doubted whether you have made the right decision? We easily can be overcome by the fear of failure. Knowing that our God is all knowing and wise, and it is He Who has promised to lead and guide us throughout life can bring us such comfort. He has promised us that if we lack wisdom, we just need to ask Him, and He will give His wise counsel generously to us. (James 1:5) When we  follow His counsel, we can be assured that we will always be on the best path, the path that leads to peace, joy, and contentment. What comfort there is in knowing that our very steps are ordered by the Lord if we love Him and lean upon Him.

Psalm 37:23, “The steps of a man are established by the Lord, when he delights in his way.”

Good and upright is the Lord; therefore he instructs sinners in the way.He leads the humble in what is right, and teaches the humble his way. All the paths of the Lord are steadfast love and faithfulness for those who keep his covenant and his testimonies. Psalm 25:8-10 ESV

And when we fail to seek His counsel or choose not to heed His wise counsel and therefore leave the path He has set before us, we can also be confident that if we confess our sin of disobedience to Him in insisting upon going our way instead of following His way, that He will forgive us and lead us back onto the path of righteousness. (1 John 1:9)

God is ‘Faithful and True’

In sharp contrast to many of the people in our lives who have let us down by not keeping their word to us or in any way have betrayed us, we can know that God is always faithful to His Word, and faithful to us His beloved children. He is a Covenant keeping God. And the only thing He cannot do is to go against His holy, unchanging nature;  therefore, He cannot lie to you. He will always keep His Word, and we can count on Him to be the same today as He was yesterday and will be forevermore.

God is not man, that he should lie, or a son of man, that he should change his mind. Has he said, and will he not do it? Or has he spoken, and will he not fulfill it? Numbers 23:19 ESV

…the Splendor and Glory and Eminence of Israel will not lie or change His mind; for He is not a man that He should change His mind. 1 Samuel 15:29 AMP

Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever. Hebrews 13:8 ESV

If God is for us, who can be against us? Romans 8:31 ESV

God will never lie to you or betray you, He is always consistent in character, and He is always for you, never against you!

God is Love

God is love, and not just any kind of love, but perfect love—the kind of love that only God has for you, which is unfailing love–and His love is able to cast out all fear. (1st John 4:8;18; 1 Cor. 13:8) God demonstrates His love for us every day in a myriad of ways, and He most definitely demonstrated the depth and extravagance of His love by sacrificing His Beloved Son Jesus Who willingly died in our place on the cross.

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.” John 3:16 ESV

That was not a one-time act of His lavish love for you and me either. You can be assured that nothing now or ever will be able to separate you from Him and His life-transforming, unfailing love for you!

For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Romans 8:38-39 ESV

God is Always At Work For Your Good

We can rely upon God at all times because He loves us, He is always faithful to HIs own, and He is always at work for our good and for the glory of His name.

“And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.”  Romans 8:28 ESV

We see an example of this in the story of Ruth, the Moabitie who lost her husband and chose to leave her homeland and cling to and follow her Jewish mother-in-law back to Israel. Through this event, God brought her kinsman redeemer Boaz into her life as her new husband, and even gave her the privilege of being in the lineage of Christ.

Another example can be seen in the story of Joseph, the 11th son of Jacob.  He was betrayed by his brothers who sold him into slavary, but God worked through this event to bring Joseph into leadership in Pharaoh’s kingdom, and then to use his leadership position as a way to provide for Jacob’s entire family, God’s covenant people, during a worldwide famine.

Our God is truly able to work all things together for our good and for the glory of His Name! Therefore, we do not need to fear the future; it is all in His perfect hands that are at work to bring about His planned purposes for those who love Him.

God is the ‘Prince of Peace’

God alone is able to give you peace in the midst of the storms that will rage in this life.

“And he awoke and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, ‘Peace! Be still!’ And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm. He said to them, ‘Why are you so afraid? Have you still no faith?’ And they were filled with great fear and said to one another, ‘Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?’” Mark 4: 39-41 ESV,

Our God has power over every circumstance; He can calm the seas and has power over the winds. He is a God of peace. We can have confidence that during the storms of our life He is with us, and if we trust in Him, we too can have perfect peace regardless of how dire our circumstances appear to be to us.

Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.”John 14:27 ESV

God does not assure us that we will have a trouble-free life, but He assures us that we can be at peace even in the midst of those troubles that are sure to come in our fallen world.

I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.” John 16:33 ESV

When the ‘Prince of Peace’ rules and reigns in your heart and mind, you never need to be afraid!

God Understands Rejection, Betrayal and Abandonment–Choosing It for Your Sake and Mine

While we may have experienced the pain of rejection or fear it, we can know that Jesus understands like no one else ever can the depth of those feelings. At the point of His greatest need, He was abandoned, betrayed, and rejected by all of his disciples, those whom He  dearly loved and had ‘done life with’ while on earth. In fact, He has been rejected by every person who has ever lived on the earth, the very people He came to earth to give His life for in order to rescue and redeem them.

We can take great comfort in knowing that we have an advocate–a ‘High Priest– Who understands every feeling we could ever experience–whether betrayal, rejection,  abandonment, or anything else other than guilt from sin since He is sinless– and He is the One Who lives to intercede for us!

There was a time when I had prayed that I would be conformed more and more into the image of Christ. Shortly afterward, I experienced a gut wrenching betrayal by a person whom I had  considered to be a close friend. She turned two other mutual friends against me as well; it felt like she had stabbed me in the gut and twisted that knife. I remember vividly crying out to the Lord as the pain seemed too great to bear. He spoke to my spirit that it was that kind of pain that He had willingly endured for my sake when He took on my sin on the cross. I was keenly aware that the rejection and betrayal had blind-sided me; I certainly never would’ve chosen it. That incident with my friend not only helped me to gain an even greater understanding of the rejection and betrayal Christ suffered on my– and your– behalf, but even more importantly, it led me to understand the depth of His unfailing love for me–how great is His love that He would choose to endure such pain and suffering for my sake!

He endured that pain for us so that we would never have to truly know what total rejection is like. For even when my friend betrayed me, I was never alone: Christ stood right beside me. And He will always stand beside you too, no matter what you are going through or fear.  He used even that incident for my good, to draw me even closer to Him and His heart of love for me.  He used it to bring home to me the reality that if God gave me Jesus as my personal Savior Who willingly endured such pain and suffering for me by dying on the cross, then I can trust Him at all times and in everything. I can be confident that He is indeed always at work on my behalf and doing what is best for me. Therefore, I never have a reason to be afraid!

He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things? Romans 8:32 ESV.
