Fear can be a constant temptation in our life. Threats of failure, pain, and disappointment surround us. We may fear having a health crisis, losing someone we love, financial instability, or a job loss. During the last several years in particular, fear seems to have skyrocketed due to so many uncertainties and an increase in hostile rhetoric as well as actions in our culture.
Although fear is natural for us as humans, it only discourages us. Fear bogs us down and stops us dead in our tracks. But, even if the things we fear come true, we need to have faith in our Savior that everything will turn out to our good because of Him.
We need to let our faith be bigger than our fear. Dwell on the Bible verses below to work towards curating a heart posture of faith over fear.
A Spirit of Power, Love, and Self-Control
Many people say,’ I’m just a worrier’ by nature, as if that’s an excuse for them to worry and be anxious and afraid. It is indeed true because all of us are born with a sin nature, and since worry, fear, and anxiety are all rooted in unbelief, which is sin, we are all worriers by nature. However, when we are born again through faith in Jesus’ atoning work on the cross, we are given a new nature–Jesus’ nature– and with that, the power to overcome our sin! That is why Paul wrote the following words:
“God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control”
(2 Timothy 1:7 ESV)
As Christians, we have been born again in the Spirit of God, a Spirit who is full of faith, wisdom, love, and power. And as Children of the living God, we have the power through Christ to act in a manner that demonstrates our faith in God and represents His character to others.
We can have confidence in God, knowing that even if a catastrophe were to hit, we have eternal salvation through Christ, our Savior. Even if everything in our life were to fall apart at the seams, we know that God is still good in everything.
“So we can confidently say, ‘The Lord is my helper; I will not fear; what can man do to me?’” (Hebrews 3:16 ESV)
Our faith in the Lord should be bigger than our fear. After all, what can man do to me when God is on my side?
Faith Over Fear Bible Verses
A focus on faith instead of fear can change our outlook on life. Take a moment to absorb these truths that God has shared with us, encouraging us to let our faith be bigger than our fear in these Bible verses. You may wish to write these on 3×5 cards or sticky notes to put on your mirror, refrigerator, steering wheel, or somewhere else in order to keep the truth in the forefront of your mind to help you defeat fear when it raises its ugly head. What you focus upon will expand, so focus upon the truth of God’s unchanging, unfailing Word that can overcome every lie that you’re tempted to believe that will cause you to fear. This is the way to ‘faith your fear’–apply God’ Word to your fear! Feed your new nature that has been born of God, and extinguish your sinful nature through meditating upon the truth found in the Bible. Do it, and your faith will increase and your fears will decrease!
