A Believer’s Response to the Overturning of Roe v. Wade

Jul 7, 2022 | Blogs

It’s very clear to see that our nation— which declares in our Pledge of Allegiance to be, ‘one nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all’ —is extremely divided. The polarization has certainly been highlighted by the recent Supreme Court ruling on the Dobbs case that overturned Roe v. Wade. Given that we who know Christ are called to seek the peace of our country, and as much as possible, live in harmony with others, how are we to respond? (Jeremiah 29:7; Psalm 34:14; Hebrews 12:14)

As followers of Christ, we are to love the Lord with ‘all of our hearts, soul, mind, and strength,’ and to love others sacrificially, as He loves us. (Luke 10:27) If we truly love God and acknowledge His Sovereignty and Goodness, we will hate what God hates and love what He loves. (Romans 12:9) God loves all of His creation—especially mankind. In fact, He loves His favorite creation so much so that He sent His beloved Son Jesus to die to rescue mankind from their sin, and to offer them abundant and eternal life through faith in Him. (John 3:16; 10:10) God hates sin because it ‘robs, kills, and destroys’ that which He created and loves, and sin always leads to death—the very thing He gave His life to overcome! (John 10:10; Romans 6:23)

God hates every form of sin, including pride, arrogance, idolatry, lying, malice, slander, dissension, hatred of others, murder. (Proverbs 8:13; Proverbs 6:16-19)

So, if we love God, we must respond to this ruling by hating the sin that God hates; by loving the people He came to save; and by exalting and honoring Him by proclaiming what He says is truth and righteousness.

These are some of the things we all should do:

  1. Rejoice! First, we should take time to rejoice and praise the Lord for this landmark ruling! After 49 years of a law that has brought death, carnage, and judgment on our land, God has miraculously intervened and answered the prayers of multitudes who’ve prayed that the federal government’s legalization of abortion would be overturned! (Psalm 107) Rejoice that what most people said was an impossibility, our miracle working God was able to accomplish! Rejoice that the ‘bloodshed of the innocent’ that defiles a land is no longer legalized by our federal government! (Genesis 4:10; Numbers 35:33; Deuteronomy 19:10) Rejoice that the decision to legalize the sin of abortion will now be at the state level, where the people’s ‘say’ can be greater. And, rejoice that so many states have already indicated they will make stricter laws regarding the murder of the unborn!

When justice is done, it is a joy to the righteous (the upright, the one in right standing with God), But to the evildoers it is disaster.…Proverbs 21:15 AMP

…let the righteous be glad; let them be in good spirits before God, Yes, let them rejoice with delight. Psalm 68:3 AMP

Praise God that He in HIs mercy intervened for the oppressed and most vulnerable!

The Lord executes righteousness

And justice for all the oppressed. Psalm 103:6 AMP

In our current anti-Christian culture, the Enemy will want to intimidate you to remain silent and not express joy in the decision. You may be tempted to do that so that you don’t ‘offend’ others who hold a differing view. However, you must choose whom you will offend: God, or people. The temptation is very real for Christians in our day to be like the people in Jesus’ time who didn’t publicly worship Jesus due to their fear of what the Pharisees might do to them:

For they loved praise from men more than praise from God.” John 12:43 ESV

Rejoice in what God has done in this landmark ruling! Boldly share with others the reason for your joy! Our God, the ‘Creator and Sustainer of Life’, has intervened to protect the children He creates in their mother’s wombs, whom He creates in His image, whom He loves, and whom He creates for His glorious purposes! To Him be glory for the great thing He has done!

2) Grieve!

  • Grieve for the over 63 million lives created in God’s image that have been legally murdered in the United States through abortion since 1973.
  • Grieve that multitudes of women (and men) have experienced guilt, shame, depression and despair following an abortion— a procedure they were assured was just removing a ‘blob of tissue’— because their consciences bore witness to the truth that it was murder and violated God’s perfect law.
  • Grieve for the doctors, nurses, and other medical personnel who have participated in this murderous action.
  • Grieve that many people have had their hearts hardened and their consciences seared by this sin, a sin that has been accepted as a ‘right’ and even celebrated in our land.
  • Grieve over the vitriol, rage, and even acts of violence from those who oppose the  Supreme Court’s ruling and their lack of respect for the authority You have set in place.
  • Grieve that our nation, which once was a ‘nation under  God’, has clearly departed from Him and His good commands.
  • Grieve that this ruling has revealed that there are many rebellious, prideful, defiant, idolatrous souls in our nation who have no fear of God.

3) Know the Truth, Share the Truth

Because sin is always cloaked in deception, only the truth can set people free from their sin. The truth about God, that He created us, and created us all for a glorious purpose is found in His life-giving Word. However, especially with the promotion and acceptance of evolution, and the removal of the Ten Commandments and prayer in our schools, the truth that’s found in the Bible has been suppressed in our nation. We have been and we are inundated with lies; many people no longer know the truth, so they’re unable to discern a lie when they hear it. You and I must know the truth for ourselves, and we must share the truth with others.

For many years, people have believed the lie that a baby is merely ‘a blob of tissue’ and not a human being.

For many years, we’ve heard the lie, ‘my body, my choice!”

But God tells us that He knits each child together in their mother’s womb; that each life that is conceived is unique and ‘fearfully and wonderfully’ made by Him, and created ‘for His pleasure and glory’. (Psalm 139:13-14 Isaiah 43:7) God has given women the extraordinary privilege of carrying in their bodies—bodies that He ‘fearfully and wonderfully created’ with a womb for childbearing— the baby that He also creates!

Technological advances and ultrasound imagining have allowed us to see the miraculous progression of the growth of a baby in his or her mother’s womb. Scientists and the medical community concur that the baby a woman carries has its own DNA separate from its mother’s; the baby has its own blood type and cell structure that’s separate and unique from his or her mother too.The baby may be male or female, so there’s a 50% chance the baby in the womb will not even be the same gender as the mother. So it’s clearly not the mother’s body—he or she is a separate  and unique person, made by God and in His image. God made it clear in His Word that the same death penalty would apply if someone caused the death of a baby in the womb as would be the penalty for the murder of a person outside the womb, another indication of His view that an unborn child is a person in his or her own right, and not just part of the mother’s body. (Exodus 21:22-25)

Therefore, the litany of ‘my body, my choice’ is a lie. The reality is that no one’s body is truly their own; every person who’s every been conceived was created by God and for Him and His purposes.  Each person will have to give an account before God for every word they’ve said and every deed they’ve done because we belong to Him. (Matthew 12:36; Romans 14:10-12; 1 Corinthians 6: 20; 2 Corinthians 5:10-11)

A major rationalization for abortion that’s often cited by abortion proponents is for the case of rape; incest; to protect the life of the mother; or fetal abnormality. Most people have no idea that the facts are that less than 2% of abortions are for the combination of those reasons!* And, for those of us who know and love Jesus, we know that even in the above circumstances He is able to work all of  those situations out for the good of the mother and child, and for the glory of His Name! (Romans 8:28) *2005 study of reasons women in US have abortions

We need to know the truth so that we won’t be deceived by the lies in our culture regarding abortion or any other sin, and we need to share the truth with others so that they too might be set free from the lies of the Enemy. (2 Timothy 4:2) In conversations with others on abortion and other topics that have to do with God’s view or righteousness, besides knowing the truth, it’s also important to discern whether people are looking for an argument or an answer. Avoid quarrels that only serve to bring greater division.

Have nothing to do with foolish, ignorant controversies; you know that they breed quarrels. And the Lord’s servant must not be quarrelsome but kind to everyone, able to teach, patiently enduring evil, correcting his opponents with gentleness. God may perhaps grant them repentance leading to a knowledge of the truth, and they may come to their senses and escape from the snare of the devil, after being captured by him to do his will. 2 Timothy 2: 23-26 ESV

4) Respond with Truth, and Always with Love and Forgiveness

God enables us by the power of the Holy Spirit to no longer be ‘slaves to sin’, but instead to be ‘slaves to righteousness. (Romans 6:18)

When we’re reviled for our love for God and our support for what He calls righteousness, we must not revile in turn. We must not let a root of vengeance, hatred, or bitterness reside in our hearts towards those who’re outraged and acting out against the Dobbs ruling. We are to remember that we too once lived in ignorance of God, in rebellion against Him, in sin, and in darkness. (Colossians 3: 5-8) We are called to love those who do not yet know Jesus, to ‘overcome evil with good’.(Romans 12:21) Our desire should be that they will come to know Him and His love for them so they too can receive power over sin in their life.

In place of taking vengeance or reviling those who revile us, God calls us to respond in this way:

Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body… Colossians 3: 12-15 ESV

We also need to be sensitive to the reality that many people whom we know, whom we will come to know, and even many within the Church, have had abortions.  We must never look condescendingly upon those who have had an abortion, or the medical personnel who’ve been involved in performing abortions. Abortion—murder— is not the unforgivable sin! Our goal should be to share the life-changing truth with those who’ve committed this sin: the truth that Jesus loved them so much that He died in their place and paid the death penalty their sin deserved, in order that they might have abundant and eternal life through Him.

We should make it clear that the only unforgivable sin is rejecting the salvation that Jesus purchased for them, and freely offers to all who put their trust in His atoning work on their behalf. We should always demonstrate Christlike love and forgiveness so that those who have committed the sin of abortion —as well as any other sin— will come to know Jesus, the Source of our love as well as our freedom from the power and penalty of sin.

5) Encourage and Support Others Who Stand for Truth and Righteousness

God Who is ‘the Way, the Truth, and the Life’ has called us to uphold the truth of His Word, to walk in and stand for His righteous ways.  God has called us to help the oppressed and vulnerable, and the unborn most definitely are vulnerable and have been oppressed by our nation’s laws.

Open your mouth for the mute, For the rights of all who are unfortunate and defenseless;Open your mouth, judge righteously, And administer justice for the afflicted and needy. Proverbs 31:8-9 AMP

Support pro-life ministries: There are many ministries that offer support to women who experience an unwanted pregnancy. They come alongside those women to help them with their physical, emotional, as well as spiritual needs. I encourage you to seek out those organizations in your area and support them; they are always in need of financial, volunteer, and prayer support.

Support state legislation, and federal and state officials and candidates who advocate for life and the rights of the unborn. Consider running for public office yourself. Do whatever the Lord leads you to do to support what His Word clearly declares is right and just.

Hate evil, and love good, and establish justice in the gate;

Amos 5:15a ESV

Guard your own heart by drawing close to the Lord by spending time reading and studying the Bible; in prayer with Him; and in fellowship with other like-minded believers.

Above all else, guard your heart,
for everything you do flows from it. (Proverbs 4:23 NIV)

6) Pray!

  • Pray for those who have had abortions or performed abortions; that they will find forgiveness of their sin and removal of their guilt and shame through faith in Jesus.
  • Pray for all of those who’ve been deceived by the lies of Satan; may they be given divine revelation and come to the truth and knowledge of God’s love for them and His plan and purpose for their life.
  • Prayfor the Church— and our nation which was founded upon faith in God and His Word— that we would humble ourself before God, forsake our sin, return to the Lord, and obey His commands, so that healing might come to our land. (2 Chronicles 7:14)
  • Pray for protection, strength,  wisdom and guidance for those on the frontlines continuing to fight this battle— pro-life ministries and organizations and their supporters; our Supreme Court Justices and all of the judiciary;  our elected and appointed federal and state officials. May they fear God above man, and act in accordance with His life-giving commands.

7) Stand upon God, Your Rock, and Be Prepared to Suffer for Him

There are those who have been taken captive by Satan and they will continue to rage against those who love the Lord. Jesus said if they hated Him, they would hate those who follow Him.

If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated me first. If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world. That is why the world hates you. Remember what I told you: ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’If they persecuted me, they will persecute you also. If they obeyed my teaching, they will obey yours also. They will treat you this way because of my name, for they do not know the one who sent me. John 15:18-21 ESV

I firmly believe we’re living in the last of the ‘last days’. This is a time that God has warned us will be when ‘…evil people and impostors will go on from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived’. And Paul continues, ‘But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed.’ We must hold on to Jesus, and cling to what we know to be true in the midst of increasing deception!

God also warned us through Paul that all who desire to live godly lives will suffer. (2 Timothy 3:12-14) Yes, you need to be prepared to suffer for your love for God! Love Him anyway!!! Love Him wholeheartedly!! Speak the truth boldly so that those who don’t know Him might come to know the One Who is ‘the Way, the Truth, and the Life’! He is the Only One Who can set them free from their bondage to the lies of the Enemy, and He has commanded us to ‘go and tell’ and share the gospel. Remember, unlike people, God will never forsake you. He will be with you even until the end of the age!(Matthew 28:20)

Keep your focus upon Jesus and eternity at all times. (Colossians 3:1-4) Remember, He is worthy of your ‘all and everything’, and great will be your reward for your faithfulness to Him! (Matthew 5:11; 16:27; 2 Corinthians 4:17)

Things which the eye has not seen and the ear has not heard,
And which have not entered the heart of man,
All that God has prepared for those who love Him [who hold Him in affectionate reverence, who obey Him, and who gratefully recognize the benefits that He has bestowed
].”

1 Corinthians 2:9 AMP
