We have access to millions of online websites to give us health advice, diagnose our symptoms, and even cure-all treatments – all of which we can access without leaving our home. While there are many benefits to having such information so readily available, it can become overwhelming very fast and can lead to erroneous conclusions as well as to anxious thoughts.
Have you ever had one or more symptoms that you put in the search engine and by the time you scoured the web you felt much worse than you had when you’d started, now ‘convinced’ that your symptoms are indicative of a serious condition? I have!
What can help to alleviate that anxiety? Focusing our thoughts upon our amazing God and His Word. George Muller once said, “The beginning of anxiety is the end of faith, and the beginning of true faith is the end of anxiety.”
There are many good Bible verses for anxiety that can help us to refocus our thoughts on His Word and strengthen our faith.
His Word vs. Online Research
If you notice your anxiety level rising when you begin to research health symptoms–or become fixated upon what you’ve read online–turn away from your device. Instead turn to Jesus, Who is also always accessible, will never overwhelm you, and will never give you erroneous information or cause your heart to be anxious! Ask Him for strength to overcome your anxiety, and for Him to help you ‘take your thoughts captive’(Romans 12:1-2) and move them away from your online research, and onto Him.
“If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth.” Colossians 3:1-2 ESV
Acting in Faith with Prayer
The other day my 92 year old father-in-law was feeling quite anxious about his health. I knew there were no words of mine that would alleviate his anxiety. As I was contemplating what I could possibly say to help him, the Lord dropped into my mind the following scripture, which I texted to him:
“You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you because he trusts in you.” Isaiah 26:3 ESV
Even as I reread the verse before sending it, I was aware of the peace that flooded my own heart as I turned my thoughts upon Jesus. I then prayed for my father-in-law to also know the peace that is found in Him alone. Although he didn’t respond to my text, later that evening when my husband and I went to visit him, we had one of our best visits.
For the first time in a long time, he didn’t focus the conversation upon himself and his ailments. Both my husband and I sensed in him a calm and peace that we’d not noticed for some time.
The Word of God has the power to change us, and it will not return void!
Good Bible Verses for Anxiety about Your Health
If you’re anxious or worried about a specific health situation, here are a few good Bible verses that can help you to overcome your anxiety and be used as the basis of your prayers.
When You Have Anxiety about Your Health
“Nevertheless, I am continually with you; you hold my right hand. You guide me with your counsel, and afterward you will receive me to glory. Whom have I in heaven but you? And there is nothing on earth that I desire besides you. My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.” Psalm 73:23-26 ESV
When You Feel Anxious about Online Search Results
“And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:19 ESV
“Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life? And why are you anxious about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin, yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? Therefore do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.” Matthew 6:25-34 ESV
When You Need Positive Thoughts
“Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.” Philippians 4:8 ESV
Turn away from what is causing you to be anxious, think of Jesus and ALL that He has provided for you, thanking Him for His faithful provision, and He will flood you with the peace that is found in Him alone.
Yes, online research can be helpful in some–maybe even many– situations. However, Jesus is ALWAYS the answer to help with your anxiety, fear and worry!
